Sailing at Night – Complete Guide
Night sailing removes many visual clues you unconsciously use during daylight. Hull shape, distance, orientation, horizon detail and sea-room become harder to judge. An experienced skipper must reconstruct the traffic picture from navigation lights, light characteristics, bearing changes, radar or AIS, charted aids, sound, vessel behaviour and disciplined watchkeeping.
Night navigation starts with aspect, not with colour
A navigation light is useful because of where it is visible from, not merely because it is red, green or white. A red sidelight indicates the vessel's port side; green indicates starboard. A sternlight is white and visible astern. Masthead lights on power-driven vessels help reveal heading and configuration. The task is to turn the pattern into a probable vessel aspect, then verify that interpretation using motion and context.
